Our dressmakers
Dot & Mila dresses are designed and produced by Alice and Nina Gage in Moss Vale, Australia, in collaboration with a family-owned, Colombo-based atelier, which has been creating smocked dresses for little girls for over 70 years. This team employ around 15 female dressmakers, who work from thier own homes.
Ethical production
Each Dot & Mila dress emerges from the skilled hands of female artisans in Colombo, Sri Lanka, who practice the generations-old traditions of hand-smocking using wooden machines and hand-sewn embroidery, passed down through families. Unlike mass-produced garments, our dresses are meticulously crafted in the intimate setting of our artisans' homes – each pleat carefully measured, each stitch purposefully placed.

This cottage industry empowers our community of female dressmakers while preserving Sri Lanka's rich textile heritage. The result is heirloom-quality pieces with exquisite details worthy of being treasured for generations, supporting a tradition that celebrates authentic craftsmanship and the women who continue to practice and pass down this art.
Every dressmaker is paid fairly, treated with respect and works autonomously. They choose to accept commissions, set their own prices and work in their own hours, enabling them to run their households and care for their children freely.
Preserving family connections
We are intrinsically connected to family. We work with just one small atelier, based in Colombo, which has been run by the same family for 70 years. Founders Nina and Alice Gage are a mother-daughter team, and among our dressmakers there are three sets of mothers and daughters.
We carry with us the values inherent to these relationships: the passing on of skills, cultural knowledge and a livelihood. We honour the ongoing bonds between generations of women even in our name – “Dot & Mila” represents the ties between mother, daughter and grand-daughter.

Sustainability and slow fashion
At Dot & Mila, we craft heirloom-quality children's clothing with the planet in mind. Our philosophy is simple: fewer pieces, exceptional quality, and mindful consumption.
Each dress is meticulously sewn by hand in small batches, explaining our thoughtful, limited releases. While our pricing reflects this craftsmanship, the difference shines through in every detailed stitch, premium lining, and perfectly finished seam.
Our production process utilises virtually every scrap of fabric, minimising waste and maximising resources.
So you can make the most of your purchase, we've included adjustable sashes in our designs, allowing each garment to grow alongside your child. We recommend selecting a slightly larger size to extend the life of each piece even further.
Nothing brings us more joy than hearing stories of our dresses being passed down between siblings, cousins, or even generations. These aren't just clothes—they're future heirlooms made to be loved, worn, and cherished for years to come.

Empowering women and girls
Dot & Mila is a 100% women-run business. Founders Nina and Alice Gage are a mother-daughter team, and among our dressmakers there are several sets of mothers and daughters. We are inspired by the talent, strength and spirit of women and girls, and seek to support them wherever possible.
We believe even our young wearers are are empowered by Dot & Mila dresses. We hope that when your little girl puts on her dress, she feels confident and special. We all know the transformative power of a fabulous frock!
